Iceland is a country often misunderstood. For instance, most people think it is ridiculously cold when, in fact, it is quite temperate and its average low temperature is warmer than New York’s!
Most people think the island is small and can be discovered in its entirety, quickly. While it is relatively easy to navigate Iceland’s Ring Road, the truth is that the country is bursting with natural wonders and amazing things to see and do! It does sometimes take a bit of work and/or driving to see some of these jaw-dropping places.
In order to be able to experience Iceland’s incredible nature and unique adventures without feeling rushed or exhausted at the end of each day, you will need to embrace your intrepid spirit and give yourself at least 10 days to traverse the island.
In ten days, you can comfortably explore the entire coastal highway of Iceland (also called Highway 1 – the ‘Ring Road’) and the Snaefellsness Peninsula in the west.
Along the way, you’ll discover naturally-hot rivers and hot springs. You’ll marvel at Iceland’s most remarkable waterfalls and the world-famous Jökulsárlón iceberg lagoon. You can visit Skaftafell National Park, have the possibility to see wild reindeer in nature, and glimpse Iceland’s most striking mountain, Vestrahorn.
You can explore the stunning Eastfjords, the wonders of Lake Myvatn, and swim in a hot saltwater infinity pool overlooking the Arctic Ocean. You will come across Iceland’s otherworldly steaming geothermal fields, can climb up the volcanic cone Hverfjall and have an opportunity for whale watching.
Keep going and you’ll stop in Iceland’s second-largest city, Akureyri, visit a 1200-year-old turf manor farm, and bunk down in a 500-year old fishing village.
Go off the grid discovering the mysterious Snæfellsness Peninsula before heading back towards Reykjavik and exploring some of the better-known highlights like the Golden Circle and the Blue Lagoon.
If you’re lucky, you might even be able to catch a glimpse of the Aurora Borealis – the breathtaking, night-time lightshow seen in the skies commonly referred to as the Northern Lights.
